This is something that I can appreciate as I actually prefer to photograph either in black and white or normally to photograph in colour with the view to changing it to black and white at a later stage, and I do agree that you look at the lighting more.
Back to my work the brief was to take about eight photographs of something that could be moved around and photographed in different lights we could use whatever light we wanted, but we needed to show shape, form, texture and colour.
I decided to take four photographs outside and four inside, the inside ones I decided I would use different lighting for but I would use a black backdrop for each one so I had nothing to distract from the object.
below are the first four as I said all taken indoors.
The first photograph was take in my conservatory, I kept a lot of the blinds pulled just using the natural light from the doors the sittings I used are F5.6 iso 200 1/60s daylight whitebalance. I like the way the flower stands out against the black I think the shape is shown here however I do not think this light shows the form of the arrangement as well as it could do.
Photograph two was taken using one studio light fitted with a soft box settings were iso 100 flash white balance f9 1/125s, this one I think shows the form better,as the arrangement looks like it is coming out of the photograph, it is also possible to see the texture in the pebbles and the water effect on them too.
Photograph three was taken using a tungden bilb and a white reflector, this one shows the colour up well not only of the arrangement but also the gold coloured dish it is sitting in, the setting for this one were tungsden white balance, 1/6's F5.6 and iso 200, I like the way the light falls on the leaves on the arrangement, casting a 'warm glow'to them but I think this kind of lighting fails to show up detail, this one has also had a bit more work done in photoshop I duplicated the layer ovelayed it then used a 10% eraser to rub over the main arrangement, the only real thing that this has altered from the original is the black is much blacker.
Photograph four and I am starting to enjoy the challenge of different lighting, this time I head back to my studio (well its my spare room really painted neutrual grey with a couple of lights but it does help to control lighting), this time I used two lights one fitted with a diffuser and one fitted with a reflector umbrella settings used were white balance flash iso 100 F 9 1/125's on this photograph you can start to see more detail and texture for example the 'knots' on the 'stems and viens on the leaves' are more noticable than they are on some of the others.
The next set of photographs were taken outside, I found this harder not because of the light but in trying to place the arrangement somewhere it looked ok and not too out of place,
Photograph five, one thing with having animals and I have quite a lot, they are almost gauranteeed to wake you up early, but sometimes it just works in you r favor, as this photograph I hope demonstrates, the shape is difinded against the fence and aslo the colour makes a good contrast there is aslo the form to be considered here and it looks to me as if it is in 3 d, one final point I photographed this without the shadow to begin with but then decided that I liked the extra detail in this photograph. settings used were F8 1/500's white balance daylight and iso 200.
Photograph six, This one was taken in full sun with flash to help eliminate any shadows which although there is still a certain amount of shadow to the photograph I do not think it detractsfrom teh overall image, you can also see some texture to the glass dish with some reflections of the base also showing as well as the speckled texture to the base. settings used F10 iso 200 1/640's flash white balance.
Photograph seven, This one was taken as the sun was setting, this one I am not sure one, as I don't really think that the light did it any real justice but I have decided to include it to show I had tried something but it didn't work out as I would have liked, as I think it is important to show some of the unsuccesful work too. settings used f5 1/80's iso 200 white balance daylight.
Photograph eight. taken in a shady corner by the shed I liked the way the colour really contrasted with the shed and also the form and shape are shown particually the form where the petals are nicely shown, settings used were F8 1/200's shady white balance iso 200,
Photograph nine, as I was unhappy with photograph seven I decided to take another one this was taken with the sun to the front of the camera, this again shows the colour and the form s there is not alot of detail on display in this shot, settings used F8 1/125's iso 200 white balance daylight, this photograph was taken about six 0clock when the sun was starting to lose its intensity.
The photograph below was not taken during this part but it was taken during my time studying the art of photography, I found it whilst looking through some photographs and decided to include it as I like the way the shape is shown.
Well the results are back and they are mixed some good some not so good and one I needed to redo, I needed to redo the Tungsden light one and having looked at it again I can see why it needs doing again, it really was not up to standard. Below is the new photograph I used a tripod and remote trigger this time last time the camera was on a tripod but rather foolishly I did not use a cable realease.
This one I hope will be much better the settings used were white balance light bulb F5 iso 200 shutter speed 1/3 second with a focal length of 58mm.
Other comments to make are I realise that I should have used a cable realease for alot of the photographs but I didn't I hope I have learnt from my mistake now and make sure that I carry the cable realease in my bag at all times now, after all you can use a makeshift tripod (a wall or something) but you still need a cable realease if the shutter speed chosen is slow.
The flash white balance I refered to in photograph meant that was the setting I had put the camera on, the same applies to the shady white balance I was refering to the symbol on the camera of a house.
So what next on to assignment five and hope this is a better one for me.
