Assignment 3 Colour
Well here goes assignment 3 colour, as I said previously
I have mixed feelings about this exercise having read other students thoughts on
this assignment.
I got off to a good start had a reasonable middle section then struggled abit towards the end.
I wanted to use nature as much as possible whether that was partly set up or things I saw out and about.
Complementary Colours
Picture
one I couldn't believe my luck with this one I was walking along the beach in
Whitstable (a place I love to go and photograph I tend to find inspiration
there) and there was all these crab and lobster shells along the tide line the
lemon was also there and all I moved was the shell on the left hand side to
expose the lemon a bit more. I think these colours blend well against each
other.

Complementary Colours
In the first image the colour works
as it is almost equal in amount, although the orange is a brighter colour it
sits well next to the blue without overpowering it, I think this is because it
is not in one solid block.
In the second picture the blue is
about one third larger in area than the orange, there is still a large area of
both colours but the orange still draws the eye towards it more.
In picture three there is not as
much red as there is green but because the green is more muted in the main the
picture works as the eye is drawn to the dominant feature of the picture ie the
flowers as the rest of the picture is not really that important.
Picture four red strawberries and
green kiwi fruit, this is more or less 50/50 split in the picture, I thinkthis
works because the red is slightly broken up by a touch of green at the bottom of
the picture which stops the eye.

Contrast
Colour Contrast
this was fun to da and some of these pictures came about purely by accident or
maybe I am starting to think more like a photographer and see pictures where
other people don't.
Pictures one and
three were both taken on the same trip out I had promised my mum a trip out for
a coffee and a walk, we decided to head out along the coast road I had my camera
with me as usual but because it was so foggy I didn't really know if I would be
able to get anything.
In picture one the
blue and red are both strong colours but beacuse of the water and the reflection
they are not fighting for dominance in the picture, the reflection although of
the red boat is not solid.
Picture two this
was taken at my mums she had an amaryllis she was proud of I looked at it then
spotted the daffodils of the table too, before long i had taken the daffodils
out of the vase and got her to hold them under the amaryllis luckily she is very
supportive and is quite happy for me to re arrange things as I want to take
pictures, again they are both strong and bright colours but I think it works
also the addition of a small amount of green at the bottom helps frame the
picture.
Picture three after
coffee the fog had started to lift so we headed back towards the harbour area to
see what was happening, I liked the top of this fishing boat and the way again
there is equal amounts of each colour making it balanced as they are both of
similar strength.
Picture four taken
at my mums who wanted to show me her garden when i went to pick her up spring
she tells me is the best time in her garden and I must admit there was plenty of
photo opportunities around her garden. I saw that her lawn was covered with
violets and noticed how were the purple and green contrasted with each other as
they are both strong colours I decided to use a reasonalby shallow depth of
field so that only part of the violets were sharp, this was to help balance the
colours.

colour accent
Colour accent I
must admit I used the violets again in this section for picture one I noticed
that in one courner of the lawn there was just one small patch of violets,
perfect I though for showing a colour accent, the small amount of purple draws
the eye and holds it there.
Picture two this
time I had help from the dog I saw this ladybird and reached for my camera at
which point the dog decided to put her nose in the plant and move the ladybird,
eventually I managed to get one to stay still on the top of the leaves, again
this works as I think it does in all the colour accent pictures of drawing the
eye to the small amount of colour as this is normally the brightest part.
Photograph three is
really just a variation of picture one these were the last group of photographs
for me to complete and these I found the hardest of all.
Picture four this
one shouldn't really work as there are two colours that are both bright and
would normally be of equal amounts but somehow this does work but I am not sure
I really know exactly why.

Similar
Colours
Picture two beach huts I was in
photographic heaven when I found these further along the coast the sun had come
out by now and I didn't know where to start first with the array of colours, I
took this one on its own to really show the two similar colours and how they
work with each other in similar amounts.
Picture three again on the beach
huts but this time the rear of them, as I think its an angle that most people
forget, I walked along and found that alot of people put as much effort into to
rear of their beach huts as the front with various sayings and pictures painted
on them. Again the colours are of similar amounts although the blue is brighter
and therefore more dominant in the picture.
Picture four the
hyacant the smell of these attracted me to begin with then I thought about
using them in the photograph, the old saying blue and green should never be seen
did come to mind but I dismissed it as I think the amount of each colour works
here.

Well that's it
assignment three completed i am still reading the photographers eye by Micheal
Freeman and also the design principles but also I have tried to read the
Photograph again by Graham Clarke but I must admit it still isn't easy to read.
I have also rediscovered a pile of practical photography magazines and its
surprising what information and help I have picked up from these it might only
be small snippets but it does seem to help.
All that's left to
do now is wait for the final prints to come back from the printers, send them to
my tutor and wait for his comments, lets hope i am still on track.
