Colour into tones in black and white
Well this was a very interesting exercise to tackle, i have always liked mono photographs but I hadn't realised how much you could change the look of the photograph but placing a filter over it (or adjusting the colour ie more red for the red filter look). I had brought a copy of digital slr photography magazine and there was an article on monochrome picture style and was it worth using, as I was in the process of doing my shots I found it quite interesting to read the article as they was also discussing adding a colour to the toning which was exactly what i was trying to achieve. The writer of the article said that using the monochrome picture style helps people to learn to see in mono, something which I agree with, as not all pictures will work when converted and its not really just a case of removing the colour and that the end of the matter there are several sometimes small and sometimes not so small adjustments to be made in the processing stage to get the exact image you require.
my photographs from the top are no filter which is ok but somehow lacking something.
red filter the red looks a lot lighter making the red flower stand out alot more, probably my favourite photo.
yellow filter, makes the whole image look warm and almost gives it an aged effect almost like sepia but not quite as brown, I don't think this works on my image.
green filter, the green beads are very dark in the image and stand out, the red flower is also quite dark, the blue filter is the final image here the red and green items are quite close in tone the yellow beads in the front of the picture appear to be very pale.
I used a grey scale card at the back of all my photographs.
The tiny yellow seed beads I used I think looked the best in the red filter photograph, I don't think they had much impact on the image in the other pictures.
My lasting thought on this exercise is that it has reinforced by love of mono photography but that you need to look and make sure it will work, as somethings still look better in colour but also that you need to experiment at times and push the boundaries as it might just look better than you thought, also don't just change to black and white and then adjust the contrast and brightness but look at the other colours you can adjust too.
Well on the assignment three I have mixed feeling going into this assignment, having read other students comments on the student site it appears to be challenging but on the other hand I like a challenge and as spring is here I might be a bit luckier than some of the others as spring is a very colourful season.
